A power project, worth Rwf3 bn, has been inaugurated in Shyira sector, Nyabihu District, where a model village is set to be constructed. The power infrastructure, serving Gakenke and Nyabihu districts, is part of the first phase of the model village construction. Roads, bridges, a health centre and piped water are already in place. The power project was inaugurated on Monday during the launch of Good Governance Month in the district.Residents attributed the development to good governance. “This area remained undeveloped for many years and we lived like paupers with no access to education, and health care,” Alphonse Mbonimana, 60, a resident said.Other residents said getting electricity and water was a dream come true.“We used to go to Musanze–several kilometres away–to visit a hair salon and recharge our phones. We are grateful we now have electricity,” said David Mbonyumugenzi who owns a photo studio in the training centre.Maj. Gen. Mubarak Muganga, the Rwanda Defence Force Third Division Commander urged residents to take advantage of the current good national policies to develop themselves. He warned residents against ethnicity and sectarianism. The Nyabihu vice-mayor in charge of economic affairs, Angel Mukaminani, said the Governance Month will focus on citizen leadership discussions meant to involve citizens in the development of the country.“We will involve residents in addressing some of the problems they grapple with right from the cell level,” she said.
