East african Foods and Beverages, a milk processing firm and makers of Joy Yoghurt, has been reopened by Rwanda Bureau of Standards (RBS). “We have reopened the plant after laboratory tests confirmed that they have complied with required standards,” Philip Nzaire, the RBS director for quality assurance, said. The standards body advised the firm to join RBS certification scheme to instill confidence in consumers that its products are safe for consumption. “In the meantime, it is highly recommended that you test every batch to ensure product safety,” RBS noted in the provisional permission to reopen the Joy Yoghurt processing line.Since December, RBS has closed down five milk processors for producing contaminated yoghurt and cheese, but only East African Beverages has been reopened so far. Chantal Natukunda, the RBS communications and marketing manager, said Masaka Dairy, Rubirizi Dairy, Ingabo Dairy and Nyanza Dairy are still closed as they have not yet met standards.
