Mauritius boosts police deployment after violence in capital

Mauritius has boosted the deployment of police in the capital Port Louis after violence between two groups broke out Monday evening, according to security sources in the Indian Ocean island state.At around 9 p.m. local time, anti-riot police were deployed to bolster officers who were trying to calm the rising tension in the capital, the sources disclosed.Residents of Plaine-Verte in the north of the capital said the clash erupted at around 5:30 p.m. along the Diego Garcia road, when a young man was beaten up by a group of youths.The young man was later admitted at the intensive care unit in Jeetoo hospital.Then the family members of the victim rushed to the scene of the incident, armed with clubs and blunt objects to fight the gang. The street was quickly turned into a battleground between the two groups.Several police units were deployed at the scene to form a security cordon within which noise and cries could be heard from a distance.An armored vehicle of the anti-riot police arrived at 9 p.m. before a security source said efforts were underway to restore calm in the troubled area.
