Northern Province picks Miss Rwanda representatives

The usually quiet and dull Musanze Sports, Culture and Entertainment Centre came to life on Saturday afternoon as the search for Miss Rwanda 2014 intensified. Over the weekend, it was the Northern Province’s turn to have their representatives for Miss Rwanda 2014 competition selected.Under the theme “My beauty, my skills, my tools for self-reliance,” 22 contestants brought forth their credentials all expressing interest in the title. The event was opened by a performance by Musanze based songstress, Natasha who moved the crowd with her own compositions as well as renditions to popular tracks. The contestants were narrowed down to the final four who met all the requirements amongst them a height of at least 1.7 metres and between 18-24 years. Cat walking across the lit stage before a cheering crowd was not enough to impress the judges; the contestants were also judged by their brains as they were asked to make brief presentations on topics such as economic development, family planning, Technical Vocational Education and Training in either French or English. Other things the panel was keen on were, Elegance, beauty and expression.After the second round of catwalk and questions, Francine Uwase, the former title holder handed over the ‘crown’ to 21- year -old Melisa Isimbi, an IT student at Akilah Women Institute. Marlene Mutoniwase and Grace Agasaro were first and second runners up respectively.22 -year -old Mutoniwase, a fourth year student at Kigali Independent University (ULK) pursuing a bachelor’s degree in finance who was the first runners up and seemed the crowd’s favourite probably because she stood out for her eloquence in English said that she was grateful for her position though she expected better. “I am glad I have made it to first runner up though I think I deserved to take home the crown. But this is not the end of the road, when I get to the national competition after the boot camp, I will take home the overall crown.” Isimbi the winner promised to be a positive role model to the youth of her area and beyond and also promised to see to it that she emerges as the next Miss Rwanda.The eager crowd who filled the hall and others watching from the windows was also entertained by Bruce Melody and new-kids-on-the-block Active. The day’s emcee was popular Radio Presenter Claude Kabengera of Isango star. One of the sponsors Bralirwa provided draught beer to attendants.The event ended at 6pm leaving the crowd time to pose for photos with their representatives in the national pageant.Over the coming weekend, the organisers of the pageant will head to the Western province for the pre-selection of the final contestants of Miss Rwanda 2014 with auditions being held at RTUC hall in Rubavu town.
