Sun glasses come in handy for reasons more than just protecting our eyes from harsh sunlight. They come in handy when you had a fight the previous day, someone punched you in the eye and you can’t bear to walk around with a black eye. They come in handy when you want to ogle at a lady without her noticing. They come in handy when you had a rowdy night the previous day and are afraid your eyes will tell your story to your boss at work.But it is a little nerving when grown men who are not entertainers and don’t have a lazy eye choose to make sun glasses their trademark as it is fast becoming in Kigali.In pursuit of coolness, we have grown men donning sunglasses as early as 7am and have them on till they go to bed. In pursuit of coolness we are seeing people in sunglasses while indoors and even worse, in night clubs.There’s nothing wrong with pursuing coolness, but at times the daylong wearing of shades ceases to be cool and comes off as a cry for attention.As if the sunglasses craze was not enough, we have others who wear clear eye glasses that are not optician prescribed spectacles with the preferred type as geeky glasses. This is a craze most common among teenagers.They not only make you an attention seeker, they also put your eyesight at risk as they let UV rays through which later leads to eye sight complications.As a general rule, sunglasses should not be worn throughout the day unless you are attempting to conceal an eye defect or are concealing a hangover. When you wear shades indoors, we will not take you seriously, sorry.When choosing sunglasses, it is also advisable that you choose something that suits your face structure. Don’t purchase them because a rapper wore similar ones in his music video.Don’t wear sunglasses that are too ‘blingy’ or shiny especially if you have a dark complexion.Avoid getting carried away by trends while purchasing sunglasses as they may not be fit for your facial structure. Brightly coloured sunglasses are only acceptable if you are matching them with the rest or part of your outfit.Above all, avoid cheap sunglasses; they have an effect on your eyesight. They let through UV rays that have a list of consequences.
