Rwandans will soon be able to report cases of corruption via SMS and a web based platform designed by Transparency International Rwanda. The new system ‘IFATE’ which is set to be launched today will allow citizens report corruption and related injustices anonymously. The idea was borne out of an ICT competition last year, where young ICT experts were tasked to come up with solutions to fight corruption.According to a research carried out by Transparency International Rwanda, on gender-based corruption, 48.1 per cent of corruption victims do not report for lack of confidentiality of the already existing reporting systems, limited physical accessibility of mechanisms and costs involved.Apollinaire Mupiganyi, the Transparency International Rwanda’s Executive Director, said the new system seeks to solve confidentiality and accessibility issues through the SMS, Web and Email. He said the complainants will never be disclosed and only the content in the system will be displayed.IFATE will also act as a monitoring system as the general public will also be able to track the actions and progress of the complaints made and generate reports on specific complaints and locations mostly affected. The SMS numbers in use will be a short code 2641, ifate@tirwanda.org and a form that can be filled on the system’s website; www.ifaterwanda.org, all free of charge.
