Italian medics train Rwamagana nurses in family planning methods

MEDICAL EXPERTS from Medivolonatari Italiano, an Italian organisation, are training nurses and midwives from Rwamagana District in family planning methods to make them able to facilitate family planning at their respective posts.Several nurses from 14 health centres in the district gathered at Murambi health centre in Muhazi Sector for the training yesterday.Dr Jean Baptiste Nkuranga, the Director of Rwamagana Hospital, said the training would create greater impact.“These specialists from Italy have vast knowledge on family planning. The skills our staff acquire will be vital as we take our campaign to households,” he said. Nkuranga said family planning initiatives were bearing fruits, but was quick to point out that with less than 45% mothers in the programme, there was need to work harder. “Family planning is at less than 45% in the district. The figure is still low, the reason why we have to scale it up,” Nkuranga said, adding that some cultural beliefs, particularly in remotest parts of the country are barriers to family planning.Dr. Guido Ragni, the head of the Infertility Unit at Milan’s Regina Elena Hospital, Italy’s oldest publicly funded infertility clinic, who supervised the training, said the country was on the right track in family planning.Ragni said nurses needed skills to conduct family planning in all communities and age groups.“Our support to the district nurses has been both technical and financial. We shall continue with the noble cause. The political will in the country is also an added advantage,” he said.Dr. Ragni, however, noted that Rwanda would have to embrace modern family planning methods most suitable for elderly women in future.
