Mad rush for Rwandan honey in Singapore

A local company, Rwanda Honey Limited, last week, sent its first batch of “EU Grade” honey to Singapore, as it seeks to tap into the fast-growing global demand for the sweet food.Within less than a week of announcing the launch, more than 120 buyers had signed up to purchase the product, which according to the company’s management, is a sign of global preference for Rwanda’s produce, to an international market plagued by adulterated honey.“The shareholders and management of Rwanda Honey are pleased to present the first batch of honey derived from the enterprise to Singapore, making Singapore the first Asian destination in recognition of our cause and roots,” Lesster Leow, Rwanda Honey’s Chief Executive Officer said.“Unrefined honey is procured from local farmers at fair trade prices and refined to EU standards. The social economic impact is vast given that honey is a value produce that will create both jobs and wealth for the farmers, build export revenue and speed up economic development,” he added.Rwanda’s Ambassador to Singapore, Jeannine Kambanda, hailed the development as a breakthrough for bilateral ties between the two countries in agriculture.Rwanda Honey started operation in 2001 with the purpose of developing honey for export and as a viable income earner for bee farmers.
