Police in Gatsibo District on Thursday arrested two men for allegedly defiling an eight-year-old girl.The accused, both residents of Kigabiro village in Gasange Sector, reportedly defiled the girl and escaped from the scene of crime, but were later arrested. The girl was rushed to a nearby clinic in critical condition.The police say the alleged rapists and the victim hail from the same area.The victim’s mother said the child was left at home as they went to till the garden which is relatively far from the home.“We always go to the garden in the morning. The girl stays behind to look after the house. These monsters found her alone and defiled her. This is unacceptable and these goons should be punished,” the mother said with tears rolling down her cheeks.Samson Achile Hategekimana, the executive secretary of Gasange Sector said the suspects were known offenders in the area.He said during the arrest, the duo was found in possession of several kilogrammes of marijuana.“These are known criminals who have been evading arrest,” Hategekimana said.The Eastern Region Police Spokesman, Senior Superitendant Jean Marie Njangwe, confirmed the incident and said the suspects would be produced in court accordingly.“They committed a heinous crime and, if convicted, would face life imprisonment in seclusion, according to article 91 of the penal code.
