FIBA Africa, the governing body for basketball on the continent, has confirmed that Rwanda will host the Africa Zone Five Club 2023 Championship scheduled between October to November in Kigali. The competition will bring together nine women’s basketball clubs from different countries in the FIBA Zone V including: Uganda, Burundi, Tanzania, Egypt, Kenya, South Sudan, Ethiopia, Djibouti, Somalia and the hosts Rwanda. The tournament acts as a qualifier for the 2023 FIBA Africa Champions Cup for Women which will take place in Egypt on December 8 through 17, bringing together 10 women’s basketball clubs from all over the continent. ALSO READ:APR ladies in first-ever continental showpiece Last year, APR women’s basketball team represented Rwanda at the continental showpiece, finishing in eighth place out of 10 clubs. Fionah Ishimwe, the Executive Director at the Rwanda Basketball Federation (Ferwaba) told Times Sport that the Africa Zone Five Club Championship will be taking place in the country, but they are waiting for FIBA to specify the dates on which it will take place between October and November. Currently, the regular season of the league is finished, and teams are going for playoffs slated for August 23 through September 20. In women’s category, APR, The Hoops, REG and IPRC Huye reached the playoffs phase after finishing the regular season in the top four.
