It’s about time Rwandan women started playing a major role in development of sports in the country, an official with the Ministry of Sports and Culture, Guillaume Serge Nzabonimana, has said.Nzabonimana, an advisor to the Sports and Culture minister, was speaking at a two-day workshop organised by the ministry in partnership with the National Olympic Committee in Kigali.Addressing 50 sportswomen in attendance, Nzabonimana encouraged them to strive to be at forefront of sports development in the country “just as you do in other sectors”.“You (women) need to play a bigger role than you’re currently doing in developing sports in the country. Women are known for being at the forefront of Rwanda’s rapid development, you also need to embrace sports (development) and make it a priority as well,” he said.Nzabonimana added, “We need more women in various sports disciplines at every level, be it in playing, coaching and administration.”Felicite Rwemalika, in charge of sports at the Rwanda National Olympic Committee, said, “We need women to be part of sports, that is why we are organising these workshops to show them that they have the capacity to do it, just the same way men do.”
