Man arrested for allegedly defiling step-daughter
Kirehe–Police in Nyarurembo village in Kirehe District is holding a 36 -year old man for allegedly defiling his seven year-old step daughter.
According to Police, the suspect currently detained at Kirehe Police Station admitted to having repeatedly defiled the child at home.
The incident was discovered by Community Health Workers (CHWs) who took the victim to a health centre, where the medics confirmed that she had been sexual assaulted.
“Her face was pale, and she had enough signs that she had been sexually assaulted. She had to be taken to a health centre. We then called the police,” said CHWs.
According to neighbours, the child’s step-father took advantage of absence of his wife to commit the crime.
“This man is a monster! The child told us that he warned her not to tell anyone or he would harm her and her mother,” one resident told The New Times.
Kirehe police said that in only two months, at least eight people had been arrested for child abuse.
“We arrested that man and he admits committing the crime. He says it was under the influence of alcohol, but it doesn’t make him innocent either,” said police.
Article 192 of the penal code stipulates that such person faces life imprisonment and a fine on conviction.
Jacqueline Murekatete, Kirehe, Vice Mayor in charge of Social Affairs, castigated child rape and defilement, saying mothers should be watchful for possible child abuse within family circles.
