Kigali Peace marathon register opens May 2

APART from the invited athletics for the ninth edition of the Kigali peace marathon, all other participants in the one day competition that will be held on My 27th, will start registering on May 2nd at the Rwanda Athletics Federation headquarters located at Amahoro stadium.

According to the acting federation secretary Johnson Rukundo, , the body has invited only four participants each from the East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi as well as superpowers Ethiopia and Eritrea.

“Athletics from different countries are free to take part in the event but will be required to foot their bills. We have only invited four athletes from our neighboring countries and others. We also expect runners from countries like Finland, Luxembourg and the U.S,” Rukundo said.

Entry fee for marathon and relay marathon runners remains unchanged from last year at $45 (Rwf27, 000) and $25 (Rwf15, 000) for the half marathon. Athletes, who wish to compete in the 5km race for fun will part with $6 (Rwf3, 600).

The winner of the full marathon will pocket $2500 (Rwf1.5m) while the tenth will earn $200 (Rwf120, 000). The half marathon winner will also pocket $2500 (Rwf1.5m).

The marathon is divided into five categories; full marathon (42km), half marathon (21km), 10.54km marathon team relays, 5km course for children and 5km run for fun race.

Elections set
Meanwhile, elections for new federation office bearers will take place this Sunday at the body’s premises. Posts that are up for grabs include: president, 1st and 2nd vice presidents, secretary general, treasurer and legal advisors.
