KIGALI - THE United Nations Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon, left the country, yesterday, after holding talks with President Paul Kagame and other Government officials over a UN report alleging that Rwandan troops could have committed human rights abuses in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Muslims to celebrate Eid el-Fitr tomorrow
KIGALI - The Rwandan Muslim community will, on Friday, join the rest of the world to celebrate Eid el-Fitr, and the conclusion of Ramadan, the month of fasting. The Mufti of Rwanda, Sheik Saleh Harelimana, told The New Times in an interview last evening that it had been hoped that Eid would be on Thursday after the completion of the 29th days of fasting but it was agreed that all Muslims fast 30 days, making Friday instead the Holy Day.

Gender equality has been a priority of the government of Rwanda since 1994 and with a new constitution of 2003, the concept of gender equality and monitoring was firmly entrenched. Basing on the commitment statement, the government formed the Gender Monitoring Office (GMO), which started operations in October 2008 to support and monitor government strategies, policies and laws.
