THE 2013 Africa Taekwondo Championships which was due to be held in Kigali has been called off, Rwanda Taekwondo Federation has confirmed. The development was confirmed by the Rwanda Taekwondo Federation Technical Director Martin Koonce in an interview with Times Sport yesterday. He said, "The African Taekwondo Championship has been cancelled because of lack of interest from participating countries and sponsors.”"Many countries had not yet confirmed their participation and this led to delays in the planning process. There was also lack of interest from potential sponsors,” he explained. When asked if there is any potential alternative host, Koonce added, "Not one we are aware of at the moment.”According to Koonce, the African event which had been slated for November 22-25, would have cost the federation $100,000 (about Rwf67.5 million) which would go into covering air flights, accommodation and general organisation of the tournament.Rwanda was picked as the host nation after Egypt pulled out following the unrest in the North African country early this year.
