POLICE have arrested three people in connection with last weekend’s murder of a businessman in Nyaruguru District in the Southern Province.Damascene Ndutiye, 33, a resident of Karimba village in Raranzige cell, Rusenge sector, was stabbed to death on Saturday night. The suspected thugs, who are said to have been armed with a sub-machine gun, took off with Rwf600,000 that they stole from the victim’s house.Ndutiye, who was a cattle trader, is survived by a wife and four children.The attack occurred shortly after mid-night, according to eyewitnesses. As the victims screamed for help and a small crowd gathered around the victim’s house, the thugs fired a single bullet in the air to disperse them and took the opportunity to free, local sources said. Southern Region Police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Hubert Gashagaza told The New Times yesterday that Police are analysing every piece of evidence to try and identify all the attackers and eventually bring them to justice.Police have arrested and detained three individuals suspected of having been involved in the theft and murder, CSP Gashagaza confirmed. The suspects (names withheld), aged between 33 and 45, are currently detained at Cyahinda Police station, he said."Investigations into the incident are still ongoing,” Gashagaza said. "We are still looking for more evidence and continue to investigate whether there are no other individuals who took part in it.”Police said they are yet to recover the rifle used by the robbers."The gun is part of essential evidence we need,” Gashagaza said, adding that Police are making every effort to recover it.He appealed to anyone with information that might lead to the gun recovery and/or the arrest of other suspects to provide it to the Police.He also called for collaboration between residents, Police and other security organs to fight crime. Meanwhile, Police in the same area recovered a hand grenade yesterday morning and proceeded to arrest two suspects who are said to have been trying to use it to steal from a local resident. Both suspects, aged between 25 and 26, were detained at Ngera Police post.It was not clear whether the two suspects are related to the first robbery case.CSP Gashagaza said the grenade recovery and the arrest is a testimony of Police commitment to recovering all fire arms illegally held in communities.He called upon anyone who might be having a firearm without authorisation to hand it over to police
