POLICE were prevented from jumping into the big four in the Turbo King Football league on Saturday after being dealt a shock 3-0 defeat against table leaders AS Kigali at Kicukiro turf.

Victory would have taken Sam Ssimbwa’s side above second-placed Musanze, who lost to Gicumbi, but instead they fell to first half goals by Bodo Ndikumana and Jimmy Mbaraga before Mabula Hakiri made it three in the last seconds of the game on a sunny afternoon in Kicukiro.

To Kigali City sponsored side, this was their sixth victory of the season as they maintain command at the summit of the standings with 18 points having lost only one game.

AS Kigali put on a solid midfield commanded by Mabula and an excellent defense led by Patrick Umwungeri and their best chance of the first half came from a brilliant set-piece created by Mwemere Girinshuti, which Ndikumana put to good use, striking past goalie Marcel Nzarora.

The visitors were happy to cede possession to their hosts, but this never stopped AS Kigali from depending on counter-attacks which earned the second goal from another brilliant combination between Jimmy Mbaraga and Girinshuti Mwemere with the latter finding the net easily beating poor defending from Gabriel Mugabo and Fabrice Twagizimana.

Youthful AS Kigali goalie Dominique Nsengimana was called upon three times in the dying minutes of the first half to keep Police at bay, thwarting Kipson Atuheire and Peter Kagabo in quick succession as Sam Ssimbwa’s men took the upper hand.

After recess, Ssimbwa reacted by sending on Emmanuel Sebanani for Atuheire and Donatien Tuyizere for Jean d’Amour Uwimana but efforts of getting a consolation proved futile as AS Kigali mounted on a good defense and creative midfield.

On the 90th minute, Mabura scored a brilliant header after connecting Eric Serugaba’s free kick, leaving Nzarora crawling on the ground, as AS Kigali side went into jubilation after extending their lead at the summit.

Police’s defeat saw them slip to seventh place, with Espoir and SC Kiyovu overtaking them after winning their respective matches with 11 points.

Elsewhere, Ali Musa scored a 38th minute goal to help SC Kiyovu secure maximum points against Esperance at Mumena stadium. SC Kiyovu has risen to fifth with 12 points and a better goal difference over Espoir while Esperance dropped to 12th position with three points.

Espoir was forced to a 2-all draw against hosts AS Muhanga in Muhanga to snatch a point which enabled them to move into sixth position with 12 points.

Coach Jean-Baptiste Kayiranga’s Gicumbi snatched their first victory of the season as they shocked Musanze to a 1-0 win in Northern Province town. Patrick Kikunda Musombwa’s lone goal helped Gicumbi move to Gicumbi move into tenth position with five points while Musanze remained unmoved on second position.

Amagaju held Marines to a goalless draw in Nyamagabe in Coach Godfroid’s first match in charge of the club following the resignation of Abdu Mbarushimana.

Action continues this afternoon with Rayon Sports Rayon Sports, without two key strikers Papy Kamanzi and Samson Jakesh, face a tricky test against Mukura at Amahoro stadium, while 13-times champions APR will be away to Etincelles at Umuganda stadium.
