POLICE impounded five vehicles belonging to the DHL, over a debt stalling business of the company in Kigali.

DHL, a global express, overland transport and air freight company, is said to have failed to settle a debt it acquired from the former Bank of Commerce, Development and Industry (BCDI).

"Our vehicles were impounded by police and are parked at Ecobank premises,” said Julie Mutoni, the country director for DHL.

She refused to divulge reasons why the police economic department impounded their vehicles, saying the matter is in court.

Daniel Sackey, the managing director of Ecobank said: "It’s an old case dating back in 1997.” He also declined to reveal more details, saying it was only a court order.

In June this year, Ecobank bought a stake in Rwanda’s third largest bank – the Rwandan Bank of Commerce, Development and Industry (BCDI), for Frw6.4 billion.

When contacted yesterday, the police spokesman, Inspector Marcel Higiro, was unaware police had impounded the cars.
