Pump prices will effective today increase by 3 per cent from Rwf1,000 to Rwf1,030 a litre of super petroleum and diesel, owing to the increase in international prices. The Minister for Trade and Industry, Francois Kanimba, said the increase is slightly lower than the average of 6 per cent which international fuel consumers experienced since July 2013. "Fuel prices on the international market have been increasing steadily, while the Rwandan franc also experienced a slight depreciation against the dollar. These combined to force fuel prices to increase,” Kanimba said yesterday. The minister added that it is still early to ascertain whether the prices will go back to normal soon, although he acknowledged that government is working on initiatives to ensure they do. "The prices are likely to remain like this until December. We are working on a number of initiatives to have a positive impact on the prices of fuel in the country,” Kanimba added. The fluctuating nature of international fuel prices had earlier in June this year led to a reduction of pump prices from Rwf1050 to Rwf1000 a litre, much to the praise of motorists.
