So yesterday was Halloween, and even though most Africans think it is a ‘muzungu thing’, I appreciate the fact that some joints have chosen to notice the day and save us all the boredom of doing the same damn thing every weekend!In truth, Halloween shouldn’t even be a ‘muzungu thing’. Why? Because it is that time of the year dedicated to remembering the dead, including saints (hallows) martyrs, and all the faithful departed believers. So, unless you are telling me that only bazungu have deceased people, excuse me if this whole ‘muzungu thing’ makes no sense to me!People who take things too seriously choose to see the day as something evil (which is funny because Halloween is actually of Christian origin), so I can’t tell you I can explain that. What I can tell you is that some of us who have been to ‘outside countries’ around that time (don’t frown), know just how much fun it can be. And let’s face it; if there is something Kigali needs, it is fun because we barely understand the word.Last year, I mentioned to my roommate that I was going to make the neighbours understand Halloween, whether they wanted to or not. I would start by trick or treating (that’s where you knock on people’s houses asking for candy). However, considering trick or treating is mostly a kid’s thing, other than looking strange at a neighbours doorstep, I was assured that I would be lucky if they didn’t stone me.We need to put the F back in fun and bring out the pumpkins every 31 October – make a Jack-o- lantern and hang it outside your house; slap any individual who thinks the curved pumpkin is for dinner! Or, host a costume party; I mean if there is one thing Africans are good at, it is the ability to fish out reasons to celebrate (and by celebrate I mean drink) – Halloween is now one more reason!Personally I love the day, and before these wonderful people decided to spice things up in Kigali, it was simply a horror movie marathon night for me. I mean, will there ever be a better time to watch scary movies? And to my dear friends who think that liking horror movies means I’m a maniac, style up! If you think the watcher is deranged, I can only imagine just how badly the guy who wrote the script is doing! So, happy belated Halloween. Now go check out those costume parties.
