Friday, October 25, was a day pupils of Umubano school will live to remember. This is a maiden school but the way they toasted to their first anniversary was resounding. The director, Emily Gilkinson, was all smiles as she welcomed parents and guests.Alvin Mihigo, the board chair, said the school started with 115 pupils but it is on course to doubling enrollment with a vision of being a model for quality education. The parents and teachers’ association vice chairpersom, John Kabagambe, also congratulated the pupils, teachers, and administration on a successful year, saying the school has done well in teaching English language.Gilkinson presented certificates to the pupils, urging them to work hard. The awards were chosen to reflect the school’s values in action. Six pupils, one from each class, were awarded. The awards included merits such as critical thinking, cooperative learning, great reader, discipline, and most improved.   Each of the classes also made presentations in songs, poems, debates, historical narratives, dialogues, and a science demonstration. Primary Three, for instance presented a speech about South African icon Nelson Mandela.  After the presentations, a graduation ceremony was held for Nursery class children who will be joining Primary One next year, and Primary Six candidates. Gilkinson later led the parents and guests to exhibitions by the pupils.
