NORTHERN PROVINCE

GICUMBI — Rukomo trading centre, Gicumbi district has finally been connected to the national electricity grid under the government rural electrification exercise.

Electricity supply utility Electogaz had erected electric poles months ago without installing the power. The project was jointly funded by the district and private sector.

Albert Kubwimana, the district official in-charge of infrastructure development, told The New Times that the delay had been caused by lack of transformers.

"We are currently installing electricity cables to supply power to Top View Hotel and Muhondo Primary School,” said Kubwimana.

The power was tapped from Byumba town, the nearest source covering a distance of about 7 km.

Rukomo is the busiest trading centre along Gatuna-Kigali highway. It is about 20 Km from Gatuna border and 45 minutes drive from Kigali.

Its proximity to Kigali City and Gatuna border makes Rukomo a stop centre for many transit truck drivers.
