Ugandans living in Rwanda, friends of Uganda, well-wishers and diplomatic corps, on Wednesday evening gathered at the residence of Uganda’s High Commissioner to Rwanda to celebrate Uganda’s 51st independence anniversary.

The High Commissioner, Richard Kabonero, treated his guests to abundant eats and drinks during the event which was attended by almost all ambassadors and High commissioners representing their respective countries in Rwanda.Several Rwandan government officials, as well as members of the private sector also attended the colourful event to mark 51 years after Britain handed Uganda its independence on October 9, 1962.Lots of food and an unlimited supply of drinks characterised the invite-only event during which the two countries toasted to the good relations that exist between Rwanda and Uganda.The Guest of Honour, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Mary Baine, commended the relations between Rwanda and Uganda, pointing out diplomatic and bilateral ties between the two countries are at their all-time best."On behalf of the Government of Rwanda, I would like to congratulate the people of Uganda upon this great milestone of 51 years of independence,” Baine said, pointing out that the last 51 years have seen the East African country make great strides in terms of development.She said Uganda has not only shared good relations with Rwanda but also it was a befitting place for many Rwandans to call home during the time of need.The High Commissioner Kabonero also pointed out that relations between the peoples of both countries date way back even before the boundaries were drawn.Kabonero said Uganda and Rwanda continue to make great progress together, observing that the two countries are currently pursuing major projects that will see people of both countries enjoy even more close ties.He cited the Mombasa-Kigali railway project as well as the oil pipeline projects among others.After the speeches, the guest of honour and the host toasted on behalf of the Heads of State of both countries before they opened the dance floor.Sibling DJs Focus and Kagame treated guests to a great music selection and Kabonero said drinks would be available until the last guests leave.Prominent among the guests was the Chief of Defence Staff Gen Patrick Nyamvumba and the Secretary General National Intelligence and Security Services (NISS) Lt Gen Karenzi Karake.The event ended past midnight.
