APR head coach Andreas Spier believes his team is a strong contender for the Turbo King Football League but has warned his players to be consistent if they are to wrestle the title from archrivals Rayon Sports.

The 13-times league champions took outright lead at the top of the league table after a comfortable 2-0 win over newcomers Esperance FC at Stade de Kigali over the weekend when all their contenders either drew or lost their matches.

Isaiah Isonga and Patrick ‘Pappy’ Sibomana scored for the army side. The German tactician has challenged his troops to build on their early season good form.

"Two wins out of two is a good start for APR. I am happy with the performances of the players in both matches but we want to be consistent in this league,” Spier told Times Sport on Tuesday.

In the two matches played so far, Spier has been rotating his squad, giving a chance to all players and he says he will continue to do so, "I am going to continue to rotate the players because I don’t see the difference between them, to me all players are at equal level and should be able to perform as such.” He added, "It’s early in the season and we still have some things to correct because no body is perfect, also we will continue to work hard as we need to play good football at this club.”

Spier said he will continue to make sure that his team plays consistently well.

The fact that we are leading the table so early, everyone now is looking at us as the favourites, so we must live with that and hope we can carry on to the end, he explained.

APR, who ended last season empty-ended, kicked off their pursuit for this year’s league title with a 6-2 mauling of Marines FC the previous weekend.

Spier’s team take on Peace Cup winner AS Kigali at Stade de Kigali at the weekend hoping to make it three wins out of three in the German’s first season in charge.
