Police in Rwamagana arrested 62 people during a door-to-door operation aimed at ending criminal activities in the area yesterday morning.

The operation was conducted jointly with Community Policing Committees and local leaders.

Superintendant Richard Rubagumya, the district police commander (DPC), said the suspects were arrested for various crimes, ranging from consuming and selling illicit alcohol, to possession of drugs, engaging in sex trade, among other crimes.

According to Rubagumya, some of the suspects were found in possession of contraband, while others were arrested for selling alcohol and robbery.

Intelligence 

"The door-to-door target operation was based on intelligence received and was effective. We netted suspects, including the prostitutes who harbour the criminals,” he said.

While addressing hundreds of residents who  gathered in a playground where the suspects were paraded, the DPC warned residents against criminal activities.

"This goes to show that the police force is determined to stop criminals. The operation should be a warning to the law breakers and no one is above the law”.

Nehemie Uwimana, the Mayor of the district echoed the need to end criminal activities, adding that local leaders would continue to support the police operations.

"At no point are we going tolerate criminal and illegal activities to plague our communities. Criminals have been consistent in their activities, but we shall not tire in hunting them down. I want to make it clear that the long arm of the law will catch up with them one way or the other,” he said.
