Rwanda’s Celestin Ntagungira has been selected to officiate at this year’s Olympic Games scheduled for August 8-24 in Beijing, China.

The Fifa, Caf and Ferwafa licenses assistant referee, confirmed the news to Times Sport on Friday, the day he was heading to South Africa to undergo a fitness test organized by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), which starts today in Pretoria.

"I’m among the Fifa selected referees to officiate at this year’s Olympic Games. Today (Friday) I’m traveling to South Africa for the mandatory fitness test".

"Having officiated the 2010 World/Africa qualifier between Gabon and Ghana late last month, I’m confident about passing it (test),” Ntagungira said.

Ntagungira said that he intends to use this opportunity to his advantage to impress so that he puts himself in line for a call up to officiate at the 2010 CAN and World Cup finals in Angola and South Africa respectively.

"This is a great opportunity for me, more especially at a time when our continent is looking forward to hosting the World Cup".

"This is one of the championships that mean so much to all officials invited, but the good thing from such events is that you learn many things,” he stressed.

Ntagungira, 40, who has been refereeing since 1997, took charge of his first international in 2001 but wants more out of the Olympic Games.
