As the nation marks the 23rd anniversary of the launch of the Liberation Struggle and Patriotism Day, today, Prime Minister Pierre Damien Habumuremyi has said it is an occasion to renew commitment to consolidating the fruits of the struggle. On October 1, 1990, the then Rwandese Patriotic Army launched a liberation struggle that stopped the Genocide against the Tutsi four years later, and set the country on the path of transformation.  In an article published in The New Times today, Habumuremyi urges Rwandans, mainly the youth, to maintain patriotism, noting that today’s anniversary is an occasion to evaluate the country’s achievements and seek continuity.  "What Rwandans are enjoying today are the fruits of the actions of our heroes and heroines during and after the liberation struggle,” he said. The 2012 Rwanda Reconciliation Barometer, Perception Survey indicated that 95.38 per cent Rwandans are proud of their nationality.  Among the fruits of the liberation struggle, he cites security, democratic leadership, promoting citizen-centred economy, eliminating graft, and "eliminating all causes for fleeing the country and the returning of Rwandan refugees.”
