Burundi’s seed one Hassan Ndayishimiye displayed odd tactics to win the second leg of the Confederation of African Tennis (CAT) U-14 tennis tournament which climaxed yesterday at Cercle Sportif.
Ndayishimiye won the boys’ singles event after knocking out seed two Gabriel Teja from Kenya 6-4, 6-1.
The Burundian ensured a repeat of the first leg where he easily defeated Teja 6-1, 6-4 last week.
Ndayishimiye exhibited his excellent tennis skills in the African tournament which was graced by President Paul Kagame.
In the girls’ category, Rwanda’s seed two Gisel Umumararungu fell to Taiwanese Kenyan-born Chen Wendy 7-5, 6-4.
Umumararungu was looking for a repeat of the first leg final which she won in three sets 2-6, 7-6 and 6-1 last week, a match that last a solid three hours.
In the doubles event, Ndayishimiye, who paired with compatriot Guy Iradukunda ousted Kenya’s Teja and Derrick Onyancha 6-4, 6-3 to scoop the second leg title.
Kenya’s Wendy and Lydia Ndagire of Uganda lifted the girls’ double category after overcoming Michelle Onyancha and Paige Mbugua 7-5, 2-6, 7-5 in the final.
Burundi’s Ndayishimiye, who won the single and doubles finals in both the first and second legs will join ITF/SATA Training Centre in Pretoria, South Africa.
