Editor, Evil will always triumph if good men continuously and deliberately do nothing. American economics expert Prof. Jeffrey D Sachs (Director of The Earth Institute, Columbia University) has for sure had many critics who have indeed, as pointed out by Mr Felly Kimenyi (in his article, Rwanda’s Millennium Village Programme is a success story, The New Times, September 26), not proposed any alternative solution to the world challenges that Prof. Sachs is trying to help address.
There are many factors that may lead to the success of a given programme. The Millennium Villages model and approach has registered tremendous achievements in Sub-Sahara Africa with clear facts and figures. For Mayange’s case, in particular, even the blind can tell that a lot has changed in that area since 2006.The Government of Rwanda has provided a conducive environment and support to this initiative, which largely explains the uniqueness of the Mayange millennium village. I would rather advise Howard French to undertake a comprehensive study on all millennium villages/sites to realise how this programme has helped uplift the lives of many people. The approach itself is okay since it has achieved great strides on many fronts and is currently being scaled up in many countries but, most importantly, we should appreciate the good men behind the whole initiative who have stood with nations in bid to alleviate extreme poverty.John, Kigali
