The security operation to end the siege at Nairobi’s Westgate mall has entered day four with some people still held hostage by Al shabab armed militants. The Kenyan Interior ministry yesterday said some progress was registered as more people were rescued from the building. It was also reported that at least two terrorists were identified and killed by the security yesterday. The incident which started on Saturday has shaken the region. No one expected human beings to be this callous. However what has clearly immerged is that the world and Africa are united against terrorism. In the wake of the incident several countries in the region have rallied behind Kenya. Support has come in all forms and from all corners. It’s a trying moment for the region but Kenya and its neighbours have spoken with one voice; that the spirit of the free world and indeed Kenyans won’t be broken by this cowardly act.The motive of terrorists is to break the spirit of humanity and instill fear in people. Times like these remind us of the magnitude of the evil terrorism poses to humanity. This also reminds us that it’s through joint efforts that we can confront this evil head on.No one is immune to terrorism; it’s an evil that requires concerted efforts. With Al Qaeda linked Al Shabab militants still at large and threatening to visit more harm on innocent people, as well as other terrorists scattered in war tone areas like eastern DR Congo, it will take concerted efforts, coordination and resources by regional countries to fight and defeat terrorism.Rwanda has in the recent past experienced terrorism, with grenades being hurled at innocent people in public places. Terrorism is a global problem and all the good people around the world should join hands to stop those behind it.
