Silverbacks falter as Kenya Shujaa win Safaricom 7s

RWANDA’S national rugby team Silverbacks returned home last evening a disappointed side after recording their worst ever performance in the annual Safaricom 7s tournament which concluded on Sunday in Nairobi.

Silverbacks lost all their preliminary games; 31-0 to South Africa’s Western Province, 62-0 to Kenya Shujaa and 24-12 against Kenyan side Mwamba.This threw them in the Jug trophy semi-final contest but they still lost to Uganda 35-5. Uganda went on to win the Jug final after defeating Kenya Home Boyz 33-0.Kenya Shujaa, who thumped Silverbacks 62-0 in Pool E, lived up to their pre-tournament billing as favourites by lifting the 2013 Safaricom Sevens main competition.In the Main Cup final, Shujaa won by a commanding 40-7 victory over Australia Renegades.Earlier on, Kenya’s second side, Morans, defeated impressive Western Province 12-10 to clinch the third place with invitations side CBA Samurai winning the Plate with a 34-14 victory over Kakamega’s Western Bulls.
