Award winning journalist Shyaka Kanuma is the editor in chief of Focus

The first thing you do in the morning.

I wake up at 6, go for a short jog, take a shower and get ready for work.

What is your favourite breakfast?

Omlette, bread, coffee and orange juice.

What makes your day dazzling?

When I read that my Barack Obama has notched another victory, or when a person gives me a scoop, or when Focus gets a big pay cheque!

Your favourite meal….

Sweet and sour pork with steamed rice.

Who is your style icon?

To be honest I don’t have one.

The most embarrassing moment…

It was in 2003 when I was one of the speakers at a certain function. The MC introduced me and I made this joke to the audience and it was tasteless, really tasteless.

Where did you grow up?

In Jinja, Uganda.

Your dream city…

New York, U.S.A.

Your greatest fear

To be diagnosed with a deadly disease.

All your money goes on what?

Oh boy! Can’t we keep that a secret…?

You’re great at…

Communicating. I’m sure you’ve already noticed that.

What keeps you awake at night?

Am never awake at night. I sleep like a baby.

What does love mean to you?

I’m well into my 30s, not yet married, but in a relationship. Guess am finding out every week, or month what the mysteries of love really are.

What is your favorite word?

It’s a Kinyarwanda exclamation I utter often. Yampay’inka!

Your most unappealing habit

I tend to be rude to people, a bad trait that I’ve been working on rectifying.

Your favorite bar in Kigali…

There is none. I’m what is referred to as a social drinker.

What is the closest you have come to death?

In 1988 I happened to be in an old wooden boat sailing in Lake Victoria. There was a strong storm and the boat was tossed here and there for almost 30 minutes, which seemed like an eternity. We almost drowned. That was very close.

What do you intend to be in ten year’s time?

A successful newspaper publisher. As things are now, we are struggling.

How do you relax?

Watching the news on CNN.

When did you last cry, and why?

In 1983. I was in primary six. The teacher gave me a thrashing with his stick for escaping to go watch movies during class time.

Your favourite item of clothing….

Blue jeans, or Khaki pants and checked shirts.

What was your favourite game during childhood?

I used to enjoy playing football.

Tell us a secret?

Then it wouldn’t be a secret any longer!
