Commodity prices are mixed across all the major markets in the City of Kigali.Carrots and onions cost Rwf700 per kilo each compared to Rwf500 last week. Tomatoes are at between Rwf400 and Rwf500 a kilogramme compared to Rwf700 last week, while a small piece of cabbage goes for Rwf300 in Gikondo, Kimironko and Remera markets.Beata Mukarurangwa, a vendor in Kimironko Market, attributed the increase in foodstuff prices in Kimironko Market to doubling of district taxes from Rwf3,000 to Rwf6,000 this month. She added that those who buy merchandise from Nyabugogo face transport problems."We have to beg (coaster) bus drivers to transport our merchandise even when they charge Rwf1,000 per 50kg, which is double (the Rwf500) we used to pay before the new transport system started. We increased the prices so we can make some profits and be able to pay district taxes and other expenses,” she said.Passion fruits cost Rwf1,200 a kilo compared to Rwf1,500 a few days ago, a small pineapple costs Rwf500, yellow bananas cost between Rwf300 and Rwf1,000 a cluster, depending on size.Beef goes for Rwf2,000 a kilo, fresh fish is down at Rwf2,500 compared to Rwf2,700 last week, chicken costs Rwf3,500 per kilogramme, goat’s and rabbit meat cost Rwf2,500 a kilo each.A kilo of rice (Pakistan) increased from Rwf700 to Rwf750 compared to yesterday, sugar goes for Rwf800, dry beans are at Rwf400, and a kilo of fresh bananas is at between Rwf150 and Rwf180, while cassava and sweet potatoes are at Rwf180 per kilogramme each.
