LONG DISTANCE runner Claudette Mukasakindi failed to defend her title as she settled for bronze in the 10.000m women final Friday evening to complete an indifferent run of results for Rwanda at the 2013 Francophone Games which conclude on Sunday in the French city of Nice.
Burundian Fiane Nukuri won gold after clocking 32’29”14”’, while Khadija Sammah from Morocco took silver in a time of 32’38”42”’.
Mukasakindi, who was eager to defend her title, posted a new personal best of 33’20”87”’ making a big improvement on her title-winning time of 35’32”60”’at the last edition.
"I am happy for the bronze medal but not really satisfied with my performance because I wanted to defend my title. Nonetheless, to be able to set a new personal best is also something I am happy about,” said the APR athletics club athlete.
Mukasakindi’s bronze medal follows another bronze medal Rwanda won in culture event, Chanson. Rwanda, which was represented by Benegihanga Cultural Group, finished third behind Haiti and Lebanon in a competition which had attracted 16 nations.
