Rwanda’s seed two Gisel Umumararungu made home advantage a key factor to ensure a place in today’s final of the Confederation of African Tennis (CAT) U-14 tennis tournament at Cercle Sportif.
The 14-year-old defeated Kenya’s Michelle Onyancha in three sets 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 to set up a repeat classic final against Chinese Kenyan-born Chen Wendy.
Umumararungu lost the first set 4-6 but made a drastic comeback to win the second and third sets 6-2, 6-1 while Wendy needed less work to eject Uganda’s top star Lydia Ndagire 6-2, 6-2.
Umumararungu, who needed three hours to effectively win the first leg over Wendy 2-6, 7-6 and 6-1 last week faces another busy task today.
In the boy’s category seed one Hassan Ndayishimiye from Burundi maintained his winning steak by beating Tanzania’s Ibrahim Shabani 6-2, 6-2 while Kenya’s Gabriel Teja ousted Burundi’s Guy Iradukunda 6-4, 6-3.
Today’s boy’s singles final, like the girls’, will be a repeat of the first leg where the finalists made their way to the final with Ndayishimiye winning 6-1, 6-4.
The two-week long event whose theme is, ‘keep your eye on the ball and book as well as defeat HIV’, will be graced by Rwanda’s First Lady Jeannette Kagame.
The event which has attracted participants from Kenya, Burundi, Uganda, Tanzania and hosts Rwanda is sponsored by the Confederation of African Tennis, UNICEF, Rwandatel, BRD, Sorwathe, Sonarwa, Novotel, and RNOC to a tune of Frw22 million.
