Human induced global warming has been blamed for the extreme weather catastrophes that are ravaging the globe, according to a report by the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society (BAMS).The study, released last week at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the UK’s Met Office, takes into account the extent to which man-made climate change influenced 12 extreme weather events that occurred in 2012.The report has linked extreme weather events like wildfires, heat waves, downpours and droughts happening around the world to human-induced climate change.Rwanda Environment Authority (Rema) concurred with the report, saying human activities were indeed responsible for extreme weather disasters. This calls for more efforts in mitigating human activities that may lead to global warming in the country. Rwanda has experienced floods and other natural catastrophes linked to climate change. More efforts are needed to address this global challenge. As part of the national policy designed to mitigate the impact of climate change, the government in 2011 adopted the green strategy for climate change and low carbon. The economic impact on climate change has also been assessed.Under the Second Economic Development and Poverty Reduction Strategy, there are plans to reduce on the economic activities that may be contributing to global warming in the country. However, it will take more than only government to prevent global warming and its effects on the country. Rwandans need to be sensitized, starting from the grassroots, to avoid any activities that may lead to climate change and its disastrous consequences. Rwanda continues to experience heavy rains that have led to loss of lives and property. Only last week torrential rains claimed the lives of two children in Nyagatare District. It is the duty of every citizen to partake in the efforts aimed at mitigating the effects of climate change. Like the research indicated, it is human activities mostly blamed for this problem. By avoiding any human activity that could affect climate negatively, you will have played your part in preventing global warming.
