KARONGI — Nyegabo Primary School got new toilets constructed by Karongi district.

The four roomed pit latrine solves the problem of sanitation which has previously been reported at the school.

The pupils totaling about 410 were using same toilet facilities with teachers.

"We had always requested the district to construct for us a bigger and better latrine but at last we have got it,” said Beatrice Uwamahoro the school Head teacher.

She added that she was always afraid that an epidemic like cholera would breakout because of poor sanitation amid the increasing pupil population.

The teachers said sharing the same toilets with their pupils was always a problem.

"It is because we had no option but it wasn’t decent for teachers to share the same toilet with the pupils,” said a teacher, adding that quite often collision could not be avoided.

The Head teacher said that a number of their pupils had deserted the school due to lack of toilets.

"Some parents had foreseen a future health hazard and  withdrawn their children,” said Uwamahoro.
