NGOMA — Elections for national youth and women representatives in Ngoma district were held on Wednesday.

Rosine Umubyeyi was elected Youth Representative, while Roseline Uzabiriza was elected to represent women on the National Women Council.

Umubyeyi replaces Marie-Clarisse Inshuti while Uzabiriza replaces Edith Nyinawumuntu.

The newly elected leaders will also fill the vacant posts of youth and women representatives at the District Advisory Council which have been vacant for the past one year.

In their acceptance speech, the two leaders promised fair representation of their electorate. They also called for cooperation with the electorate in order to get their views on issues affecting them.

Constance Mukabagirishya, an official of the National Electoral Commission who presided over the elections urged the elected leaders to put into reality what they promised but not just to remain in verbal form.

"Most of you tend to promise things in order to get elected into office but when you get there you forget what you are supposed to do and you divert to doing your personal things,” she said, calling on them to be committed to their entailed duties.

"You have set goals and that’s what you should aim at,” she added. Of the total cast votes, two votes were declared invalid.

Mukabagirshya called on the public to be strict when voting in the forthcoming parliamentary elections.

"This shows that we might get so many invalid votes in the upcoming elections. If we can get two invalid votes in these small elections, what about the bigger one,” she wondered.

She urged the voters not to be influenced in voting candidates of their choice.
