Today Rayon Sports vs AS Kigali - 3pm
The City of Kigali sponsored side AS Kigali FC will get the chance to win a second trophy of the year when they face Rayon Sports in the inaugural Super Cup on Sunday afternoon at Stade de Kigali.
The curtain-raiser to the 2013/14 national football season can barely be held in much regard, with most observers viewing it as little more than a glorified friendly but it promises to make next season a more compelling affair.
Rayon Sports head coach Didier Gomez da Rosa stated this week that his team is hungry for more trophies after dominating the local scene last season.
"Every player knows that our mission is to continue winning trophies so as to be a dominant side in the country as well as in the region,” the Frenchman said.
He added, "We won’t take this game lightly, we need the trophy and we must go for it by ensuring that Rayon Sports beats AS Kigali to the title in bid to start a new season on a high note.”
AS Kigali will be under the guidance of assistant coach Jean de Dieu Mateso in the absence of the head coach, but the stand-in coach is confident of winning a second trophy of the year following their Peace Cup against Malaria success. The City of Kigali side’s head coach Cassa Mbungo and goalkeeper’s coach Thomas Higiro are both currently on duty with the Junior Wasps preparing for the Francophone Games in Nice, France.
"We are capable of winning the cup because we have prepared well, we have everything we need to win this game.”
"Right now, all I can say is that we are ready to upset the league champions. We have a chance of winning our second trophy of the year and I am confident on achieving that feat,” Mateso said on Friday.
The match, the first of its kind in Rwanda, is sponsored by Turkish construction company Babil Group of Companies (Babilaks Construction Limited).
The winner will walk away with Rwf5m and the runners-up will take home Rwf2m, while the rest of the money will go into organising the event.
