As the common English adage goes ‘Never judge a book by its cover,’ Claire got the shock of her life when she fell head over heels for a good looking guy who spoke decent English. Little did she know that Josh could not read English - not even a menu!  It started when Claire was invited to dinner at an expensive restaurant by her sister Joan’s very handsome and sophisticated friend Josh. Josh was about 6ft and had a sexy physique just like the men described in Mills and Boon novels. When Claire met him, he was dressed casually in dark blue jeans, a super white t-shirt and white sneakers. His cologne was just irresistible. He was driving an ML 350 4-Matic. Coupled with his looks was the fact that he was a gentleman. He opened the car door for both Claire and Joan when he went to pick them up and even when they reached the restaurant. The restaurant was the kind that prepares only continental cuisines thus common snacks served at fast food joints were out of the question. After being offered a table, the waiter immediately brought them hot towels to clean their hands and bring them starters before they actually looked at the menu. When the menu was brought, amidst enjoying the starters, Josh, without looking at the menu asked the waiter if they had ‘Chicken Lollipop’ (crunchy chicken drumsticks) and the waiter said no. Without giving the menu a single thought, Josh told the waiter that he would not have anything but chicken lollipop. Claire was confused and asked Joan on Whatsaap whether Josh didn’t have the money to pay for dinner. Joan was so busy talking to Josh that she didn’t see the Whatsaap message. When Joan and Claire finished making their orders, Josh still didn’t touch the menu to check for other options. Claire was so bothered with Josh’s decision that she insisted that Josh order for something else, but he still refused. She later insisted that they share her meal.  When they were through with dinner, Josh paid the whole bill and Claire openly asked him why he was paying for a meal he had not eaten. Claire tried to tell him she wanted to pay for her own meal. He paid the bill insisting that he had invited them to dinner so he had to pay. On reaching home, Joan told Claire that Josh knew how to speak English but he could not read and that she didn’t want to embarrass him because he was interested in Claire. The reason he had taken them to such a sophisticated place for dinner was to impress Claire because he had seen her Facebook profile picture and was attracted to her. Claire decided it was best not to see him again.
