Three East African Community (EAC) Heads of State have committed to fast-tracking cross-border joint infrastructure projects that would ease movement of goods and services within the region.

Presidents Paul Kagame of Rwanda, Uhuru Kenyatta of Kenya and Yoweri Museveni of Uganda reiterated their resolve at the commissioning of Mombasa Port Berth 19 today.

The 240-metre long berth is expected to significantly boost container handling operations at the port while enhancing regional trade facilitation and economic development.

The inauguration ceremony preceded a major trilateral infrastructure summit due in Mombasa where the leaders were expected to deliberate on the progress and way forward on each of the recently agreed joint infrastructure projects.

These projects include a railway line from Mombasa to Kampala and then Kigali and a proposed Mombasa-Eldoret-Kampala-Kigali oil pipeline.
