Casual labourers, commonly known as ‘Karani Ngufu,’ have been urged to be security-conscious as they go about their work.Dismas Rutaganira, the Nyarugeng District Police Commander (DPC), told hundreds of casual labourers at Nyamirambo Stadium on Wednesday to always report suspicious cases to security agencies.The Police message comes in the wake of a recent grenade blast in Nyabugogo, one of Kigali’s busiest transit points.The DPC commended the group’s contribution to the fight against drug abuse in the City of Kigali."Initially, you were among drug addicts but we believe you have since reformed. Help us also identify those bad elements,” Rutaganira said.Commitment to securityThrough their respective cooperatives, the casual labourers promised to form community policing committees that would be reporting to the Police on security matters.Hope Tumukunde, the city vice mayor in charge of social affairs, urged the casual labourers to stay away from people with criminal tendencies. They were also encouraged to embrace city programmes such as the ongoing hygiene campaign. The City has about 4,000 casual labourers operating across its three districts.The group asked authorities to help their association rein in rogue elements among them.They also reported that some of their leaders have embezzled over Rwf8 million from their contribution but are still at large.Officials promised to look into the grievances the labourers raised.
