A regional course on ‘Transitional Justice and Peace building’ opens today at the Rwanda Peace Academy in Nyakinama, Musanze District.The course is a result of collaborative efforts between the Academy and the UN Institute for Training and Research.According to a statement received by The New Times, the course that will end on August 28 was preceded by a two-day training of trainers programme aimed at building the capacity of the Rwanda Peace Academy personnel in teaching methodology."The goal of Transitional Justice and Peace building’ course is to present the concept of transitional justice in peace building contexts. The course will provide a holistic overview of the current transitional justice strategies and mechanisms, their nature and practical application, and the challenges and lessons learned that various actors may encounter and apply when participating in post-conflict settings,” Col. Jill Rutaremara, the director-general of Rwanda Peace Academy, said.The course will be attended by a total of 25 military, police and civilian officers from six African countries, including Burkina Faso, Burundi, Kenya, South Sudan, Uganda and hosts Rwanda.Asked why Tanzania was the only EAC partner state not taking part in the course, Col. Rutaremara said the Minister for Defence had extended an invitation to his Tanzanian counterpart."The Rwanda Peace Academy received three names of their representatives, comprising one military and two civilian officers. We finalised all the necessary arrangements, including sending them air tickets, but they didn’t show up,” Col. Rutaremara said.
