The outgoing Rwanda Security Forces Joint Task Force (JTF) in Mozambique's northernmost province of Cabo Delgado on Friday, August 4, handed over to the incoming contingent after a one-year tour of duty in the province.

Outgoing Rwanda Security Forces' Force Commander Maj. Gen. Eugene Nkubito handed over to new Force Commander Maj. Gen. Alex Kagame, while outgoing Task Force Battle Group commander Brig. Gen. Frank Mutembe handed over to Col. Theodomile Bahizi.

The handover ceremony took place at the Joint Task Force headquarters in Mocimboa da Praia and was attended by both commanders, the Police component commanders, intelligence staff and other officers.

On arrival, Kagame was briefed by the outgoing joint task force commander on the RSF activities. He also had the opportunity of touring the RSF area of responsibility including Mocimboa da Praia, Pundanhar, Afungi, Palma and Mbau areas.

Kagame thanked the outgoing Rwanda Security Forces (RSF) leadership for the "impressive achievements registered" throughout the year.

He also commended the good coordination and cooperation with Mozambican forces in maintaining security in the RSF area of operation.

In July 2021, Kigali, at the request of Maputo, deployed 1,000 troops to Cabo Delgado to help fight the terrorists, stabilise the area and restore the authority of the state. Rwandan troops were sent to work closely with Mozambique Armed Defence Forces (FADM) and forces from SADC, in the fight against terrorism in Cabo Delgado.

Joint efforts between Rwandan and Mozambican forces quickly yielded good results, circling many bases of the terrorists, capturing them and restoring security.
