MUHANGA — The Decentralisation Community and Development Project (DCDP) has donated four exotic cows to four farmers’ associations in Muhanga district. The donation is aimed at boosting their farming capacities.
The cows worth Frw1.2millions were handed over to the beneficiaries on Monday July 14 in Mushishiro sector through the Muhanga Nutritional and Agriculture Development Programme (PANDAMU).
About four hundreds residents of Kabacuzi, Muhanga, Rugendabari and Mushishiro sectors are expected to benefit from the offer.
PANDAMU project is also sponsored by Broederlyk Delen, a Belgian NGO, the Province of Flandre Oriental (PFO), and it has previously implemented the skills training and capacity building programme in 80 associations comprising of 4000 members.
"The same residents are already undergoing four-month capacity training in veterinary skills and the programme has also empowered residents in agricultural skills in order to promote transformation of products,” said Ward Claerbout, a Belgian volunteer.
He noted that, "The beneficiaries have also acquired skills to construct radical terraces in the farmlands, which improves the agricultural product, protects the environment and PANDAMU supervisors provide equipment and technical assistance.”
Some of the beneficiaries held a brief meeting and discussed ways through which the cattle can be beneficial to association members. They decided that proper care of the livestock and accountability was necessary.
