EASTERN PROVINCE

RWAMAGANA — The Ideal Democratic Party (PDI) officials have urged their members to uphold their code of conduct and fully participate in the forthcoming elections. The call was made at a meeting of party members held at Gatagara Vocational School at the weekend.

"The meeting aimed at sensitizing our party members to observe the code of conduct, and turn up in big numbers  during the ongoing elections,” Hassan Karinganire, PDI’s coordinator for Eastern Province told the press after the meeting.

The meeting drew party officials and close to 90 party representatives from across the seven Eastern districts.

Karinganire explained that their meeting was in line with resolutions taken during the retreat of political parties on May 16 at Akagera Game Lodge.

The retreat reportedly recommended that political parties should enlighten their members on the proper code of conduct for political organisations and their members during elections.

Referring to the proper code, Karinganire noted that PDI is a party of integrity and called on its members to follow suit by electing representatives who are persons capable of contributing to the development of the nation. He warned party members against voting basing on ethnic lines.

Rwanda’s 2008 elections started on July 05, 2008 with the election of mediators at village (Umudugudu) Cell and Sector levels.

Other subsequent elections are scheduled throughout this month of July and August, while parliamentary elections are slated for September 15.
