KAMPALA - National University of Rwanda maintained their rich form in the ongoing All African University games taking place in Kampala to clinch gold in men’s volleyball. In a twist of events, Uganda and South Africa had to play a re-match to determine who faces Rwanda in the final.
Prior to that, South Africa had been confirmed as the finalists but then there was an argument that Uganda had collected the same points in the preliminaries as S. Africa, hence a need for a rematch, which Uganda won 3-1.
Though Rwanda had defeated Uganda in the early stages of the competition, it was a different story as a determined Ugandan side put up a spirited fight, buoyed by home fans that had filled Lugogo Indoor Stadium to capacity.
Rwanda won the first set 23-20 but Uganda came back to win the second 24-21 but Rwanda came back strongly in the third and determinant set winning it 26-17.
Man of the match Eric Nsabimana and Habineza handed Ugandans a series of spectacular spikes, which they (Ugandans) could not stop.
The match watched by Rwanda ambassador to Uganda Ignatius Kamali Karegyesa proved out to be the most competitive game in the whole tournament.
Ingyenzi Troupe, a Ugandan based Rwandan traditional outfit drummed and danced throughout the whole game, attracting curious fans, more so the South Africans who seemed to be moved by the Rwandan drums.
Coach Fidèl Nyirimana attributed the win to the diehard spirit of the team and the fans especially Rwandans living in Uganda, who supported them from start to finish.
The bi-annual event, in its fifth edition is organized by Federation of African Sports Universities (FASU) started last Saturday and ends today.
