FootballAPR (Rwa) 1-0 Simba (Uga)APR ATHLETES, who are representing Rwanda at the 2013 EAC Military Games had a rough time on Thursday as they were outpaced by Kenyans, who dominated the cross country race held at Kahawa Barracks.Hosts, Kenya Defence Forces reigned supreme in the 12-km race, emerging top in both men and women (8-km) categories.Kenyans took the top five positions of the men’s 12km and came first and third in the women’s 8km. Evergreen Mark Kiptoo, a world cross country finalist in Bydgosycz, led KDF to a podium finish in the men’s 12km in 35:28:5 ahead of compatriot Reuben Limaa, who clocked 25:34:1.Peter Matelong the sibling of famous steeplechaser Richard Matelong, came in third in a time of 35:39:3. Kiptoo, who holds the World Military Games 5,000m record of 13:06:7, attributed the exemplary performance to teamwork within the Kenyan team.Rwanda’s best bet in men’s category was Eric Sebahire, who finished in a distant 12th position after clocking 37:06:00.Hussein Habumugisha finished 18th in a time of 38:00:07; Jean Baptiste Simukeka finished 20th in 38:03:05; Godfrey Rutayisire finished 22nd in 38:19:02; Alex Nizeyimana finished 25th in 38:42:08 while Théoneste Kayiranga clocked 38:48:08 to finish 27th.Kenya finished top with 10 points and Uganda came in second with 43. The third spot went to Tanzania on 64 points and fourth to Burundi, who managed 66 points. Rwanda was fifth with 72 points.In the women’s category, Tanzania’s Jackline Sakillu denied a podium finish clean-sweep for Kenya, coming second on 27:47:6. Sela Chepleting scooped the top position for KDF with a time of 27:40:5, while compatriot Cpl. Innes Chenonge was third in a time of 27:53:6. Claudette Mukasakindi was the best placed Rwandan in ninth position after a time of 28:26:00. Veteran runner, Epiphanie Nyirabarame finished 18th in a time of 29:55.4, Angelline Nyiransabimana clocked 30:11:04 to finish 19th, while Genes Nyirahabimana and Vivine Niragire finished 23rd and 24th after clocking 32:24:08 and 32:39:04 respectively.Kenya finished top with 13 points, Tanzania was second with 33 points and Uganda was third with 50 points.Meanwhile in football, APR started their campaign with a 1-0 win over Uganda People’s Defence Forces’ side Simba FC thanks to Charles Tibingana’s strike.
