The Muslim youth Association for Development has developed a programme aimed at empowering the religion’s youth with life skills.As part of the programme, 13 women selected from Kigali have completed a five-month training in art and craft.The training that started in March was closed this week in Gahanga Sector, Kicukiro District."This is the beginning and more will benefit from this programme. We, therefore, call upon the beneficiaries to utilise the skills acquired so that they bring change in their lives and their families,” said Ismael Hakizimana, the president of the association.Hakizimana said the initiative aims at fighting poverty and unemployment among the youth.The association is committed to supporting the youth and the general population in issues that will eventually lead to sustainable development."Today, women must effectively engage in economic activities unlike before when they were just left to do domestic chores like cleaning and washing,” said Hakizimana.He also commended the beneficiaries for having been committed to complete the training.Hajira Mukeshimana, one of the beneficiaries, said the training helped her acquire fresh skills."I am sure that with what I have acquired here, what is remaining is to work, get my capital and start my business. I believe that this will help me to play a financial role at home,” she said.Mukeshimana urged fellow women, especially those she completed the training with, to work and avoid entirely depending on their husbands.Other training programmes are basket weaving, making necklaces and earrings as well as robes, among other products.
