A Local Defence Guard in Nyagatare who shot dead a 3rd year Student of Umutara Polytechnic University has been remanded, police officials have confirmed.
"The Nyagatare court ordered that the unidentified guard be remanded into custody for one month until his final fate is decided,” Nyagatare District Police Commander, Emmanuel Kalasi said on phone last week.
James Kayumba, 27, was shot dead last Friday by a local defence guard in Barija, Nyagatare sector.
Kayumba together with other students were shot at while on their way back to the campus from Barija cell where he had gone for the Liberation Day ceremony.
Kalasi said that Police had finished its investigation and the matter was now before court.
Late Kayumba’s colleagues say they were returning from Barija (in Nyagatare District) when they met a person who was driving carelessly.
He almost knocked them and they decided to follow him and see where he was heading and report him to the police.
On the way, they met someone and had an argument with him but the man later fled towards Rwanda Development Organisation (RDO) offices where a member of the local defense was guarding.
When they followed him there, the guard shot twice in the air and the students took off. As they were running back, he shot Kayumba in the back.
